This program is a focused review and update on the current knowledge base regarding intervertebral disc pathology. The goals of the five hours are to: ensure an expert level of disc evaluation on plain films, increase understanding of advanced imaging procedures and terminology, and establish an evidence-based approach to patient treatment and management.

Dr. Seron will show x-ray films and other images and discuss differential diagnoses and management options. She will present clinical decision points for obtaining consultations and advanced imaging for the various types of spinal disc pathologies seen in chiropractors’ offices.

Dr. Seron is a 1982 graduate of Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (SCUHS) and has earned a chiropractic diplomate in both orthopedics and radiology.  Presently based in Boulder, CO, she has maintained an x-ray consulting practice in Colorado for more than 25 years.  Dr. Seron reads MRI studies as a staff radiologist at MRI of America in Centennial and at Family Health West Imaging in Fruita. A postgraduate faculty member at several chiropractic colleges, she has presented seminars on radiology, advanced imaging and other subjects throughout the United States and Canada. Dr. Seron has also been a consultant to the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners since 1987.

Dr. Laney Nelson has served as the team chiropractor for the Utah Grizzlies Hockey Team, the Salt Lake Stingers, and the Brigham Young University. He has worked with the 2002 Winter Olympics and the PRCA Wilderness Rodeo Circuit. Dr. Nelson has published in the field of manipulation under joint anesthesia and has been associated in two different hospital systems performing those procedures. He is currently the director for the BIOFREEZE Sports and Rehabilitation Center at Logan College of Chiropractic. Since the Center opened in 2006, Dr. Laney has served at the helm with a goal of advancing chiropractic as a critical component of the sports medicine field. Under Dr. Nelson’s direction, the clinic has reached over 1000 athletes, developed programs working with the Disabled Athlete Sports Association,  and provided care for athletes at the 2011 Pan American Games in Mexico. Dr. Nelson was named 2012 Sports Chiropractor of the Year by the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (ACBSP).

Advances in Rehabilitative Exercises

In the lecture to be presented, we will discuss, present and perform anticipatory forms of exercise that heighten the core stabilization, strengthening and flexibility aspects of the rehabilitative programs. We will learn and perform various types of kinetic exercise currently considered state-of-the-art. These forms of exercise can be used in any office setting with minimal financial investment. Further, anticipatory core stabilization exercises have been shown to change factors such as pain, psychological distress and fear avoidance beliefs which have a direct effect on disability, return to play and return to work.

Dr. Don Aspegren is currently a nationally recognized author, speaker and researcher in the field of chiropractic and sportsmedicine. Dr. Aspegren has chapter contributions in numerous texts and journals, and in 2004 he became the first chiropractor published in the prestigious American Journal of Sports Medicine involving research on professional golfers with hip and low back pain. He has served as a member of the official sportsmedicine team on the professional golf tour (PGA) from 2001-2007. Dr. Aspegren has taught in the post-graduate faculty divisions of chiropractic colleges on the treatment of injured athletes and rehabilitation for over 20 years. He was one of the first chiropractors selected to participate as part of the sportsmedicine team at the United States Olympic Training Center. Dr Aspegren is also a lecturer for NCMIC, the worlds largest chiropractic malpractice company, speaking on safety, rehabilitation and the use of guidelines in clinical practice.

This presentation is lecture 10% and “Hands on Technique” 90%. Anatomy review and most common subluxation patterns will be given. State of the art manipulation techniques will be taught for each area then each DC will have the opportunity to perform the techniques on each other under direct supervision of Dr. McClure. The goal is to teach the practitioner the necessary skills to repeat them in their office immediately with reproducible results.
